Pause! Plan! Prevent! Report back from Nebraska

PausePlanPreventThis week I had the opportunity to co-leas a training on primary prevention of sexual and domestic violence with Jennifer Grove of the National Sexual Violence Resource Center at the Nebraska Domestic Violence Sexual Assault Coalition‘s Pause! Plan! Prevent! Conference in Lincoln.  Debby Tucker of the National Center on Domestic and Sexual Violence concluded the conference by facilitating participants in developing action plans to strengthen primary prevention efforts in Nebraska.

After describing the value of developing logic models for prevention (see the PreventConnect eLearning unit on Logic models based on the work by Wendi Seibold-Old Crow) we highlighted four programmatic options for primary prevention:

  1. Comprehensive School based efforts to have multiple activities going beyond classroom presentations. Examples include Start Strong, Respect Works and Dating Matters.
  2. Community Mobilization where community members themselves describe the problem, identify the solutions and carry out their own plans. We reviewd the PreventConnect eLearning unit on community mobilization developed by Lydia Guy Ortiz.
  3. Norms Change strategies to shift how the community looks at preventing sexual and domestic violence. Examples included bystander approaches and engaging men strategies.
  4. Youth Leadership where young people take the lead in creating change.
