Using Image Theater for Preventing Sexual Violence in Marginalized Communities

The 2016 National Sexual Assault Conference, “Hopeful Future, Honored Past,” was held in Washington, D.C. August 31-September 2, 2016. This workshop was part of the prevention track. Learn more and access workshop materials here.

In this workshop, Skye Brown from Multicultural Efforts to End Sexual Assault (MESA) addresses the role of image theater and multi-movement marginalized community perspectives for preventing sexual violence. The presenter provides an overview of the Pedagogy of the Oppressed and the public health approach to sexual violence prevention. Through activities and participants’ experiences, the audience is reminded of their own positionality and power dynamics, and gain skills in using image theatre to increase protective factors against sexual violence.
